Inspired by the great paintjobs that others have done on this mini, I was inspired to crank this chap out pretty quickly (for me!) .
He's not a masterwork, but I'm really pleased with the way he has come out - even the satin varnish has given him a tiny bit of sparkle on the darker, cool rock, which I'm pleased with!
Your comments however, are most welcome.

So how did you do it? I have an Eldar Avatar I was going to give a lava look so I'd like to know any tips and paint suggestions you might have.
What did you use for the rock -it looks a little brown --tin bitz?
Take one cup of plain flour ...
OK ...
* Primed white - because we'll be using light colours in the deepest parts of the model.
* Paint the whole model yellow (in this case, GW Sunburst Yellow) - left a little bit in the deepest recesses of the eyes and mouth white.
* Highlight with orange (in my case and 50:50 mix of GW Sunburst Yellow and GW Blood Red) - leave yellow showing in the deepest recesses
* Highlight with red (GW Blood Red)
* Highlight red/brown (a 2:1 mix of GW Scorched Brown and GW Blood Red)
* Highlight dark brown (a 2:1 mix of GW Scorched Brown and GW Chaos Black)
* Final highlight was just GW Chaos Black.
At each stage, leave a little bit of the previous colour showing - prehaps a bit more than you would do usually, as the light-source on this model is supposed to be internal, not external, so the normal shading/highlighting considerations can be ignored.
Also, as you get "higher and darker" remember to start leaving some extra cracks that don't have yellow at the bottom, but are orange or red or red/brown at the bottom - just because this is what lava looks like.
Final top tip is the use of a Satin finish varnish. This is what gives the slightly metallic sheen to the black/brown without needing to use metallic paint, as cooled lava doesn't (usually) have large enough pieces of cooled metal or quartz to see individually - its more the general reflection effect of the microscopic bits of metal and quartx embedded in the cooling rock that gives it is shine.
Burnt bits on the base are just black highlighted with an increasingly light black/white mix.
Hope that helps, Phil. Let us know how it goes with your Avatar of the Bloody Handed God
Aha, a tutorial!
I just added a "tutorial" tag to this.
Thanks for the painting tips! I have plenty of miniatures that would benefit from that treatment.
I get it- you sort of
I get it- you sort of highlight in reverse!
This should be added to the tutorials section
Thanks
Exactly
I didn't think of adding tutorials as I don't see myself as that good, compared to the work of some of the others we see online regularly. I'm just a gamer who paints a little and doesn't play enough!
Glad you all liked it, though!
...
Well, you did pretty well in the majors in Golden chef!
But I think the tutorials are more about sharing how you did something interesting that being Golden Daemon standard.
Some people who paint to a very high standard only seem to complete one figure every three to six months, so you have to wonder just how much of a masterpiece they'd turn out if they only had a week in the evenings during the advert breaks...
speed painting
True. I'm currently trying to crank out one figure per day (or equivalent) - and I only really get evenings once the kids are in bed and the chores are done - I'm just about there, although some of those are 15mm figs
Last night I finished the 6mm Rorke's Drift diorama I've been working on as a Christmas present for my wife's uncle. I'll try and get some pictures up over the weekend.

Personally I find painting more relaxing if I don't set myself artificial deadlines. Let it take as long as it takes. That said, started two squads on thursday night and finished them last night (sunday), plus a character figure, and made a good start on a third squad. Pretty happy with that given using enamel for some bits slows things down.
looking forward to seeing Rorke's Drift
It is in tutorials!
All you gotta do is add "tutorials" to the categories of a post, and it shows up with the tutorials! Pretty clever, huh?
