Painting a City!

I've been playing some 15mm WWII games lately and one of the scenarios we wanted to try was one on a 2 foot square board, the terrain being entirely made up from buildings, so as to get a Stalingrad-type game.

However, since we were totally lacking enough buildings for anything this ambitions, I went ahead and made some. Nothing fancy - just blue foam with holes in stuck to mounting board with a hot glue gun.

Not very good pic, but to get a sense of scale, everything is based on a grid of 3 inch square bases, except the building top-left which is on 4 inch square grid. Some of the buildings are grouped together in construction, others are just one building - for a compromise between flexibilty and number of units.

Painting them is the problem I have, though. I'm not looking to crete a work of art, or anything super-stunning, just something practical and well, greyish.

I was thinking of undercoating them with black, and then dappling on a heavy coat of dark grey, a slightly less heavy coat of mid grey and then a drybrush of light grey, and perhaps a little white.

Do you guys think that would work? Too simple? Any advice or suggestions are most welcome!

Not sure if this is any help, but wonderful to behold in any case

I'd probably think about drybrushing with a 1" paint brush

Thanks Phil - that is really

Thanks Phil - that is really useful! Happy happy happy!

Yeah - large brushes are going to be the order of the day with this scenery! I've had a bit longer discussion about this same subject on Custom Hobby Forum here, if you want to read it Smiling

In the warhammer skirmish book there was an article on painting gravestones, and some of the colour suggestions might be worth trying with your buildings. If it is no longer on the GW site let me know -I used one of their suggestions for my ghoul with gravestone -bestial brown, vomit and rotting flesh I think -comes out quite different to what you expect and a good approximation of aged stone or plaster.

You may want a darker base colour than you expect, and since you can't spray, suggest one of the basic colours from MP -large quantities of paint at very reasonable prices.

The US army MOUT manuals can be found via the following link -there are several and chapters on same in other manuals, but start off here

I've got a large tub (250ml)

I've got a large tub (250ml) of hobby acrylic black, from HobbyCraft that I'm going to use as a base for all of these buildings, along with a bunch of "proper" acrylic paints in tubes that I was given by an artist who tried acrylics but found they prefered watercolour - and a few packs of smaller tubes I've picked up when I've seen them on remainder.

Can't find that article on the GW site, but I think I can see what was done from your description. I might give something similar a go Smiling

Useful hint on painting foam with wood glue first so you can spray prime it

Thanks again, Phil

Thanks again, Phil Happy happy happy!

I've got an even larger tub of PVA glue (1 gallon!), so I might have an experiment with protecting foam with that. Would be a lot easier to be able to spray-prime. I've also got a couple of grey and brown sprays that may speed up the whole thing!
