Here's how Steve painted the armor:
K. Popular question of the day is how I painted the armour.
Righty. Basecoat of Boltgun Metal and blacklined between plates. I then gave it a splodgy wash of heavily thinned Charadon Granite. Then I did that again to build up the splodges. Then I did the same but with a little black added to create some darker areas. Then I did another wash in a few selected areas with thinned Scorched Brown. By this point it was all looking pretty murky.
Then I highlighted around the edges with thinned Boltgun Metal to get a little of the metallicness (is that a word?) back. I kept the paint thin and wet-blended it back into the plates. Once that was built up I did fine highlights with Chainmail.
At this point it was pretty much there but I started to glaze areas with either Boltgun Metal or Charadon Granite (extremely heavily thinned and with very little on the brush so you are effectively drybrushing). Mainly working over the colour transitions to smooth them out.
Took a little while but possibly not quite as long as that sounds as the work didn't need to be painstakingly neat and I was often fixing up rough areas...
